Overview:
The Merlin II is a Coalition of Sovereign Nations and Outworlds Alliance 
exculsive 'Mech. Only found in use among their armies, or in the case of the 
CSN, their Foreign Legion. This has been the case since it's unveiling back in 
3041 and now makes up the vast majority of the Outworlds Alliance Battlemech 
forces. As mentioned, the only other buyer of this unit is the GDI Foreign 
Legion made up in large part by previously Dispossessed ex-Mercenaries and 
foreign nationals.


One of the interesting factors in the Merlin II is that its entire armament is 
classified as to where it's constructed, and by whom. No agency has yet come 
forward to claim responsibility for the advanced armament found on the design. 
However in all likelyhood these systems are likely coming from somewhere within 
the CSN considering the discovery of no less then two SLDF memory cores within 
their territory, and being amongst the first to exploit them. The sole reason 
for this estimation is that all the armament seen is registered under CSN 
patent regulations as being GDI intellectual properties. Whether this is true 
or not is wildly speculated.


Capabilities:
While strictly an up-ranged version of the original MLN-1A, the MLN-2X also has 
a few surprises in store for anyone expecting to face a pre-4th Succession War 
design. The older 240 class engine was pulled to be replaced by a 300 class, 
increasing its maximum speed to over 86 kmph. To make up the weight difference, 
it was offset by remaking the internal structure using endo-steel components. 


Additionally, due to the use of endo-steel, and the GDI's standard compact 
cockpit, still the wunderkind of the Inner Sphere, there was room left over to 
enhance the LRM-5 into the new MML-5. Not only that, but it has been augmented 
with Artemis-IV as well. As per the CSN's mastery of guidance electronics, even 
this can be combined with the TAG functions built into the cockpit systems and 
sensors. Two tons of ammunition, split evenly between LRM and SRM rounds supply 
the launcher. All ammunition is of course protected by CASE as in all units the 
GDI accepts into its military.


As mentioned above, the Merlin II's weaponry has had its range drastically 
enhanced by utilizing extended range versions of it's PPC, medium lasers, and 
even its onboard flamer. This does nothing to enhance its damage, but 
considering the solid nature of the design along with the well known 
versatility of its parent, this is not considered a weakness by any stretch. In 
fact, its designers even used the extra heat generated by its weapons to 
further enhance the 'Mech by giving it triple-strength myomers. With the speed 
boost from this, along with carrying reinforced barrels to allow for effective 
melee, they have given it a strength from its only real weak point.


Deployment:
By far the largest deployment of the Merlin II is to the Outworlds Alliance and 
its reborn ground forces since the signing of their mutual defense pact treaty 
with the CSN. While the original factory for the design is on Alpheratz - where 
it also still produces the older design for exports aboard - there are at least 
four additional factory complexes that have been constructed elsewhere within 
Alliance borders to increase production numbers. 


Originally they were sent to existing units to be swapped out for any older 
'Mechs in service at a one for one method. Having done so, they now are seen in 
newly created units and are commonly the first 'Mech a new Alliance pilot sits 
in after graduating. Only larger or light scouting 'Mechs, still in servicable 
conditions, are kept in use. The rest are either being sold, or broken up for 
spare parts, unless a family owned unit.


Curiously, all new Alliance units using the Merlin II are no longer being 
stationed along the borders with the Federated Commonwealth, but are instead 
having been shifted north towards known CSN held territories, such as the 
Grantville Cluster. Considering the overall friendly attitudes between the 
Outworlds Alliance and the CSN this is puzzling to all observers. It is also 
slightly worrisome for the Draconis Combine considering how badly mauled they 
were by the GDI three years prior to the 4th Succession War during the 
Samsonov-Dragoons debacle. On the other hand, these units are al being keptl at 
least three jumps from the border, and all three nations have observers on 
sight which show these units to be conducting group training exercises.

Overview:
This is the 'true' loadout of the Merlin II that is delivered to the GDI 
Foreign Legion. No 'true' Merlin II have been successfully captured by a 
foreign power due to the numerous safety systems within the unit that cause it 
to self-destruct first its armament and then via a deliberate overloading of 
its fusion reactor. Only GDI nuclear devices carry more redundancies in their 
components. GDI Foreign Legion pilots are briefed on these upgrades and are 
well aware of the fact that the GDI will go to any and all means to silence 
anyone found to have discussed the advanced nature of the 'Mech.


All armament is constructed at Earth, Úlfur, and Foundation before being 
transfered to the GSC 02652-01324 P (Lyrica) facility two jumps 'east' of 
Antallos, where they are fitted to the Merlin II chassis, both the publically 
known model, which is also sold on Antallos and this, the GDI Foreign Legion 
variant. Standard Merlin IIs have their armaments shipped to their respective 
factories in the Outworlds Alliance. Only shipments headed to Antallos are 
routed through Lyrica.
